I experienced 100% the same... had to use powerdesigner @ university, wondered for weeks why my word always was showing the signs you described... a few minutes ago I noticed the "add in" tabs and wondered what that thing there was... I just deleted it (hard to find that option in word!!!) and now everything works... too sad I was unable to find your description earlier... greetings Holy shit!
